um / about 101 projects & 101 gallery
101 Gallery Reykjavik opened in 2004 and already in its first year hosted exhibitions by some of Iceland’s most prominent contemporary artists. The gallery exhibits Icelandic artist that have established themselves, both in Iceland and internationally, though some represent the youngest generation while others have been active for two or more decades. Run by owner Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir, the gallery reflects her connection in the Reykjavik art world where she is herself active as a designer, as well as being a major collector of contemporary art. The artists approach is varied and highly individual which, more then anything, can be said to characterize Reykjavik art in recent year. All have strong connection abroad – having studied and worked in various cities around the world – but all exhibit actively in Reykjavik and participate in the outgoing dialogue that shapes Icelandic art. In exhibiting these Icelandic artists, Gallery 101 becomes partner in their international exhibition programmers and welcomes cooperation with galleries and institutions everywhere.

The postal code for the Reykjavik City centre has become shorthand for the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Concentrated in the oldest part of Reykjavik are the Opera, National Theatre, art museums and host of galleries, cafés, clubs and workshops. With buildings dating back to the nineteenth century – and archaeological digs revealing settlements from the ninth century – district 101 is the historical focus of the city, centre of government, commerce and culture, and a magnet for your artists, film makers, musicians and writers from around the country and from abroad. There is some mystery as to why there has been such an explosion of created energy in Reykjavik, the most northern of Europe’s capital cities, but there is no denying the drive and variety of Reykjavik’s cultural life.

101 Gallery is right in the city centre and around the corner is 101 Hotel, also owned by Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir. The hotel was originally built in the 1930s and the architecture reflects the early modernist style that was a major influence in that period. The build formerly housed the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party but has since been transformed into Reykjavik’s trendiest boutique hotel, entirely designed by Ms. Pálmadóttir herself. The gallery and the hotel are part of the same effort to bring art and design to the forefront and set a standard of aesthetic quality and intelligent connoisseurship.
